Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Barcelona, Tomeu Ventayol (Alcúdia, Mallorca, 1945) burst into the island’s artistic scene towards the end of the eighties with a work purified of any referential element and impregnated with features that will remain throughout his career: formal austerity and extreme compositional simplicity, on the one hand, and an interest in sign elements, on the other, to which he will soon add a passion for three-dimensionality, which will lead him shortly after to develop an intense sculptural activity. In parallel to his pictorial experimentalism, and which becomes constant until today.

Ventayol draws from the sources of geometric abstraction, informalism, objet trouvé, arte povera... but also conceptualism, abstract expressionism, land art, informalism. And although sometimes a face, a human figure or a landscape is taken as a starting point, there will always be a rigorous synthesis process that will conclude in essential, forceful forms, where the effectiveness of the minimal gesture emphasizes its evocative potential.
